The Problem

Current flight booking websites often suffer from complex search filters, confusing navigation, and a lack of personalization, leading to user frustration and inefficiency. Users frequently encounter overwhelming amounts of information, unclear pricing, which can hinder their ability to make informed decisions and complete bookings.

Solution

To address common issues with flight booking websites, the Fly Anywhere redesign focuses on simplifying search filters, improving navigation, and offering personalized recommendations. The solution includes presenting information clearly, ensuring transparent pricing, and streamlining the booking process.

User Research

I conducted an interview with a frequent flyer to understand their needs and frustrations. I was then able to make notes defining user pain points, positive and neutral experiences throughout 2 competitor websites. User interviews highlighted frustration with locating destinations, using the calendar, and selecting fare options on competitor sites. Analysis(below) confirmed these issues, showing cluttered interfaces and confusing fare categories. Simplifying these features on Fly Anywhere will make booking flights much smoother.

Analysis

By analyzing two competitor websites, I used a customer journey map to identify key pain points in finding locations, using the calendar, and selecting fare options. An affinity diagram helped prioritize these insights, guiding my design decisions for Fly Anywhere. This approach ensured the redesign was user-centric, simplifying critical booking features for a more intuitive and engaging experience.

User Flow

I created a user flow diagram for Fly Anywhere by mapping out the steps users take from initial flight search to completing passanger details. This diagram visualized the sequence of interactions and decision points users encounter, helping to streamline the booking process and enhance usability. By iterating on the diagram based on user feedback and usability testing, I ensured that Fly Anywhere's redesign prioritized user needs and provided a seamless experience from start to finish.

Interaction Design

I used sketches to quickly visualize and explore design concepts for the Fly Anywhere redesign. By sketching out different layouts and interface elements, I was able to iterate rapidly and gather feedback from stakeholders and potential users. This process helped refine the design, ensuring that the final version was user-friendly and aligned with project goals.

Prototyping and Handover

The improved calendar, smart default for departure airport, and clear fare options in the prototype streamline the booking process, reducing user effort and minimizing errors. These enhancements make the experience faster and more intuitive compared to competitors. I also created an annotated handover for future use.

Conclusion

The Fly Anywhere redesign successfully addresses common issues in flight booking websites by simplifying search filters, enhancing navigation, and offering personalized recommendations. Key improvements include clear information presentation, optimized mobile experience, transparent pricing, and a streamlined booking process. Throughout this project, I learned the importance of user-centered design, iterative testing, and integrating real-time updates to enhance user satisfaction. These insights not only improved the user experience but also set a new standard for intuitive and efficient flight booking solutions.
